Frequently Asked Questions
What decorative finishes does Nota Design offer?
Nota Design offers eight signature finishes: Venetian Plaster, Marmorino Plaster, Tadelakt, Limewash, Gilding, Lacquer, Wallpaper Installation, and Microcement. Each is applied by hand and tailored to the specific look, texture, and durability a space calls for.
What's the difference between Venetian Plaster and Marmorino Plaster?
Both are lime-based plasters made with marble dust, but Venetian Plaster is applied in thin layers and burnished to a smooth, polished-marble sheen, while Marmorino is applied thicker with added limestone and fine sand, giving it a more stone-like, textured range from matte to glossy. Marmorino is also suitable for exterior use.
Is Tadelakt waterproof enough for bathrooms and showers?
Yes. Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster prized for its smooth, seamless, satin-like surface and natural water resistance, making it a popular choice for bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes, spas, and other wet areas.
How does Limewash finish age over time?
Limewash develops a soft, weathered patina as it fades gradually, which is part of its old-world appeal. Because of this natural fading, it typically requires more frequent touch-ups than other finishes. Its high pH also lets walls breathe, reducing the risk of blistering, peeling, mold, and bacteria.
Do you offer gilding for commercial spaces, not just residential?
Yes. Gilding — applying gold or metal leaf to ceilings, walls, furniture, frames, and decorative objects — is one of our most requested finishes for commercial clients, with effects ranging from a subtle glow to a full mirror-like shine.
Where is Lacquer finishing best used in a home?
High-gloss lacquer is especially well-suited to cabinetry, high-traffic areas, and humid rooms like bathrooms and laundry rooms, since its hard-shell finish resists wear. It also visually opens up a room, making ceilings feel higher and walls feel wider.
What is Microcement, and where can it be applied?
Microcement is an ultra-thin decorative coating made from cement, fine aggregates, and mineral pigments, applied in multiple layers at just 1–3 mm thick. It creates a seamless, grout-free finish that works on floors, walls, showers, and countertops alike.
Do you install designer wallpaper as well as plaster finishes?
Yes. We install luxury hand-painted silk, grasscloth, random-match designer, and other handcrafted wallcoverings. Every installation includes full wall preparation and primer application for a flawless, long-lasting result.
Do you work directly with homeowners, or only through designers and architects?
Both. While we regularly partner with interior designers and architects to execute site-specific designs, we’re happy to work directly with homeowners and businesses on residential and commercial projects throughout New York City.
